Siri for iOS 18 to gain massive AI upgrade via Apple's Ajax LLM

Safari, Spotlight Search, and Siri will gain significant AI-related enhancements with the release of iOS 18. One of the key features in the works for Safari is text summarization. Siri will also receive a similar update, allowing it to generate responses to relay the content of messages in a simplified way. Apple's AI model will generate basic responses entirely on-device. More advanced replies or text summaries will need server-side processing.

The M4 chip and its A-series variants are likely to have a dedicated component for handling Local AI requests, ensuring fast processing regardless of the device's workload. In contrast, older chips will have to process Local AI tasks concurrently with other activities, resulting in varying speeds depending on the device's busyness.

I never heard anyone hype up iOS 17 as a major update, just a solid, feature-light refresh.

I hope this AI upgrade will be available on older devices, including current HomePods, rather than being limited to the latest flagship models, so I can finally consider purchasing one now that Siri's functionality is no longer a major turnoff.

Siri's AI capabilities would greatly benefit from a dedicated AI chip, perhaps something like an A1 chip specifically designed for Siri.

I have a bad feeling that Apple will find a way to mess this up somehow.

It's ridiculous that tech giants like Apple and Google, with their vast amounts of user data, are only now trying to catch up with smaller companies that have leveraged publicly available sources like Yahoo Answers and Reddit to develop more advanced AI capabilities. We should have had advanced AI assistants like Jarvis years ago, not still be waiting for them in 2022.

Honestly, the switch to USB-C was a more significant improvement than any of these artificial intelligence enhancements.

It's likely that the improved Siri will only be available in English, limited to the US, and only compatible with the latest iPhone models. And who knows, maybe it'll even be released with iOS 18.5 in the fall of next year. But let's be real, it's Siri, so we can't expect too much - it's a miracle if they can even get one language working in one country.

GPT-4o’s Memory Breakthrough! (NIAN code)

The article discusses a new benchmark called "Needle in a Needlestack" (NIAN) that measures how well large language models (LLMs) pay attention to information in their context window. The benchmark involves a prompt with thousands of limericks and asks a question about a specific limerick at a certain location. The author tests various LLMs, including GPT-4 Turbo, Claude-3 Sonnet, GPT-4o, Mistral's models, and GPT-3.5-turbo, on this benchmark.

The results show that:

* GPT-4o performs almost perfectly on the benchmark, a significant breakthrough. * GPT-4 Turbo and Claude-3 Sonnet struggle with the benchmark. * Mistral's models, including the 8x22 model and Mistral large, perform poorly, with accuracy ranging from 50% to 70%. * Shorter prompts improve the performance of models, as seen with Mistral 7b. * Repeating information, such as repeating the limerick 10 times, can significantly improve performance, as seen with GPT-3.5-turbo.
