McDonald's Loses EU Trademark for 'Big Mac' Name, Opening Door for Rivals

The European Union's General Court ruled that McDonald's failed to demonstrate genuine use of the 'Big Mac' trademark for chicken sandwiches, poultry products, or restaurants, leading to the revocation of their trademark in specific categories. This decision comes after a lengthy legal battle with Irish fast-food chain Supermac's, who challenged McDonald's trademark in 2017. The ruling opens the door for Supermac's and other companies to use the 'Mac' term in their branding and products within the EU, though McDonald's maintains its right to the 'Big Mac' trademark for its flagship beef burger.
